### Loose Memories

%Synopsis: Ethan comes to awareness hollowing out their own skull after what feels like their life flashed before their eyes. They are in a different body, a Mothman cryptid’s body. People are approaching, they panic and run off.

Ethan Hoffman felt like his life had flashed before his eyes, in a _very_ literal sense. His memories had somehow gotten loose, leaving him as a dumb beast, then they were all forcefully put back. The worst migraine he’d ever felt bore through his brain, only intensifying as Ethan coalesced. When the randomized tour of his life ended, Ethan existed as a shapeless being that could only feel pain. Every other sensation was distant, indiscernible, but slowly approaching.

The pain subsided somewhat, leaving just enough room for him to panic. What the fuck is happening? This is way beyond the scope of a dissociative episode, this was something else, something horrible. He couldn’t even feel his body. Pieces of him seemed to be missing, but he couldn’t tell what they were. What’s going on!? Ethan tried to recall the events of the last few minutes, fighting through thick disorientation.

He’d been running. He was upset. Why? The camping trip. It always went wrong, his parents loathed that he didn’t fit their version of the ideal man. The dead dog’s memories had led Ethan to the campsite, a potential feast. His Dad would always buy uncut firewood, always insist Ethan split it and always laughed when he was too weak to do so. Ethan liked to think he was beyond the point of giving a shit about his parents backwards opinions, but the intense feeling of humiliation betrayed the thought. He went on a stroll to calm himself, returning with a pretty flower in his hair. His mom wordlessly snatched the flower, sighed, then tossed it in the fire. That was his breaking point. He cried, he argued, he screamed, then he ran. He stalked an adolescent human through the woods, waiting for them to get farther from safety. Wait, what?

Before that thought could be interrogated, the pain returned. Sensation was approaching faster, just barely becoming comprehensible. Vision was returning, and it was incredibly overwhelming. The world was so bright! He didn’t seem to be squinting automatically like he should, but manually intervention had no effect. Another wave of pain hit, and he flinched. Flinched! He realized he was holding something, something quite heavy. His grasp weakened, but he didn’t let go. The arrival of more throbbing also brought more sensation, whatever he was holding smelled absolutely tantalizing. There was a similar taste in his mouth. He thought to blink to improve his vision, but it simply wasn’t possible.

The last wave of pain rolled through him, and the world finally felt comprehensible. The sounds of the forest filled his ears. The trees swayed in the wind, the birds sang, and crunchy footsteps approached. Help was on the way, but perhaps he didn’t need it anymore. The disorientation was steadily fading, and the pain was gone. Ethan’s panic momentarily calmed as he took in the calming sounds of nature. Then he looked down.

He was holding his own corpse. His head looked like it had been cracked open and hollowed out by a beasts claws, only a couple chunks of grey matter were left. His face seemed to be stuck in the middle of transitioning from sobbing to shocked. His favourite pastel coloured hoodie was soaked with blood and viscera. Chunks of skull, skin and hair attached, littered the ground around him. \ No newline at end of file
