# A Peeved Scarecrow
#### A oneshot adventure for D&D 5E
By: Sarah B.
}}
### Summary
An encounter with a strange gourd has the party investigating a murder.
### A Muffled Plea
The party encounters a pumpkin that appears to be alive; it twitches and speaks with a muffled voice. Whoever rolls highest on a perception check will deduce that it's saying "Carve me a face!"
If anyone decides to comply, have them roll a Slight of Hand check. The quality of the carving depends on how high the roll is.
After the face is carved, light somehow shines from within the pumpkin. Candle-like flames appear as pupils. It begins to speak! It politely introduces itself as **Rupert Sinclair**, and requests additional help to construct a body. Let the party be creative with how exactly they build him. Nearby are hay bales and an abandoned shed with wood planks and farming tools.
Rupert with profusely thank the group for their help. He claims to have been recently murdered by his neighbor **Sebastian Hill**. Both of their mansions are nearby. They've apparently had a paltry feud for years and have been trading petty misdeeds. The last thing Rupert did was trample Sebastian's petunias, and Sebastian retaliated by stabbing him to death. Rupert thinks it was quite the overreaction!
The party member the highest History modifier will recall the fact that Scarecrows are often dangerous spirits of vengeance. Rupert will somewhat agree if confronted, claiming to be "quite cross!" about being murdered. He's never been angrier in his life! Doesn't mean he's going to be rude about it.

##### Roleplaying Rupert Sinclair
Rupert Sinclair sounds very posh and classy in a British sort of way. The type to say things like: "Cheerio!", "Jolly good, my friend.", "Oh, my word!", "Goodness me.", "My my, that is rather ghastly."
Despite his poshness, Rupert is quite good natured. He has exquisite manners, but doesn't harshly judge those who don't. He tries his best not to offend anyone who hasn't wronged him. He lived a privileged life, leaving him oblivious and somewhat insensitive towards everyday folks struggles. However, he wants what's best for everyone.
Rupert can't hold a proper grudge to save his life. If pushed to the extreme Rupert would take out his anger through petty mischief and scathing insults. Violence would simply never cross his mind. The pen is mightier than the sword!
It doesn't seem like the fact he's died has quite hit him yet. He's been rather easygoing about it all despite his claims of being "rather cross about the whole thing!" Even as a 'vengeful spirit', his anger is still quite tame compared to most.
