An encounter with a strange gourd has the party investigating a murder.
+
A Muffled Plea
+
The party encounters a pumpkin that appears to be alive; it twitches and speaks with a muffled voice. Whoever rolls highest on a perception check will deduce that it’s saying “Carve me a face!” +If anyone decides to comply, have them roll a Slight of Hand check. The quality of the carving depends on how high the roll is.
+
After the face is carved, light somehow shines from within the pumpkin. Candle-like flames appear as pupils. It begins to speak! It politely introduces itself as famous explorer Rupert Sinclair, and requests additional help to construct a body. Let the party be creative with how exactly they build him. Nearby are hay bales and an abandoned shed with wood planks and farming tools.
+
Rupert with profusely thank the group for their help. He claims to have been recently murdered by his neighbor Sebastian Hill. Both of their mansions are nearby. They’ve apparently had a paltry feud for years and have been trading petty misdeeds. The last thing Rupert did was trample Sebastian’s petunias, and Sebastian retaliated by stabbing him to death. Rupert thinks it was quite the overreaction!
+
The party member the highest History modifier will recall the fact that Scarecrows are often dangerous spirits of vengeance. Rupert will somewhat agree if confronted, claiming to be “quite cross!” about being murdered. He’s never been angrier in his life! Doesn’t mean he’s going to be rude about it.
+
Once his body is built, he’ll be able to move around on his own. He humbly requests that the party escort him home and help him confront Sebastian. He’ll pay handsomely once he has access to his fortune.
+
Rupert uses the Scarecrow stat block, but increase his health to 120.
+

Roleplaying Rupert Sinclair
+
Rupert Sinclair sounds very posh and classy in a British sort of way. The type to say things like: “Cheerio!”, “Jolly good, my friend.”, “Oh, my word!”, “Goodness me.”, “My my, that is rather ghastly.”
+
Despite his poshness, Rupert is quite good natured. He has exquisite manners, but doesn’t harshly judge those who don’t. He tries his best not to offend anyone who hasn’t wronged him. He lived a privileged life, leaving him oblivious and somewhat insensitive towards everyday folks struggles. However, he wants what’s best for everyone. His staff views him favorably, but rolls their eyes at his idiosyncrasies.
+
Rupert can’t hold a proper grudge to save his life. If pushed to the extreme Rupert would take out his anger through petty mischief and scathing insults. Violence would simply never cross his mind. The pen is mightier than the sword!
+
It doesn’t seem like the fact he’s died has quite hit him yet. He’s been rather easygoing about it all despite his claims of being “rather cross about the whole thing!” Even as a literal ‘vengeful spirit’, his anger is still quite tame compared to most.
+

Rupert’s Mansion
+
Rupert’s mansion is quite lavish, full of strange trinkets collected during his adventures. He’s not quite sure what the trinkets are, but they sure are pretty!
+
A thunderstorm pours down on the party by the time they arrive at the mansion. Strangely, the front door is ajar. Inside the foyer are four immediately hostile Cultists standing over the cleanly chopped up corpse of Maggie Belmont, one of Rupert’s maids. Fight!
+
Once the battle is finished, Rupert will take a moment to mourn Maggie’s death. But somehow her severed head claims to be alive! Being dismembered is rather uncomfortable though, could someone sew her back together please? Her sewing kit is nearby. The quality of the stitching depends on a Slight of Hand check.
+
Maggie has no idea why she’s not dead. She’s also relived to see Rupert is still somewhat alive. Rupert will introduce the party, and Maggie will thank them. Once she’s put back together, she’ll stand up and explain that the other maid Gregory Smith was kidnapped by more cultists!
+
A new adolescent voice calls out, “Are the evil people gone?” and a Skeleton walks into the room. Luckily, it’s just Albert, Rupert’s protégé. He improperly cast an invisibility spell, and it didn’t affect his bones. He’s having trouble dispelling it too. No cause for alarm.
+
Rupert heroically declares that he’ll go show Sebastian a piece of his mind, and rescue Gregory! Maggie and Albert stay behind, Rupert insists. They’ve been through enough! Maggie grumbles about having to mop up her own blood.
+

Maggie, Albert and Gregory
+
Maggie is the kind of woman who deeply cares for people, but shows it through good natured ribbing. Rupert has been the best employer she’s ever had by far, but she has a long list of small gripes. He’s an absurd man!
+
Albert is quite the eccentric adolescent. He first met Rupert when he tried to rob him in the city. His parents had recently died, and he had nowhere to go. Rupert talked to him, and eventually the conversation led to Albert’s dream of being an adventurer! Rupert offered the boy an apprenticeship and place to live, and he accepted. He helps out the maids as rent.
+
Gregory is a shy, caring man. Gregory was meant to be one of Sebastian’s maids, but met Rupert on the way there. Rupert offered a better wage, and Gregory went to Rupert’s instead. (Good thing too, Sebastian would have totally just scarified him). He is a transgender man, and the household fully supports him.
+

Sebastian’s Mansion
+
From outside, Sebastian’s mansion looks stereotypically haunted; It’s run down, yet has striking gothic decor. The front door is locked. The ground floor windows have metal bars preventing entry, but the upper floor windows do not.
+
The mansion is ominously empty and quiet. It smells horrible, like a combination of mould and dead bodies. Most rooms are covered in cobwebs like they haven’t been used in years. Nearly every torch is extinguished, except two lanterns illuminating a statue in the library. The statue is of a woman kneeling, holding a bloodstained bowl above her head. If fresh blood is spilt into the bowl, the closest bookshelf will slowly swivel open, revealing a stone passageway leading underground.
+
1 +
SPIRIT OF POLLYANNA

+

+
+
+
+

There is a pamphlet near the statue; one side written in abyssal, the other in infernal. “Thank you for purchasing your new blood powered lock! Need help setting up? This quickstart guide will show you how to integrate the product with an existing door or hatch…”
+
Spider Ritual
+
The downwards passageway eventually leads to a small ritual chamber. Strapped to the table and bloodied in the center of the room is Gregory. He is surrounded by strange symbols written in blood, some even carved into his flesh. Standing overtop him with arms outstretched is a chanting Cultist Fanatic, flanked by two other Cultists.
+
When the party enters the room, they’re too late! The ritual is complete, and Gregory violently transforms into a Spider Person (Ettercap)! A spectral collar forms around the spiders neck, and the Cultist Fanatic holds the leash. Gregory is forced to pledge his servitude, now bound to their bidding.
+
When the party is eventually noticed, fight! Rupert will beg the party to avoid hurting Gregory. Gregory will perform a DC 10 Wisdom save on each turn and opportunity attack, if he passes he can resist harming the party.
+
Aftermath
+
When the Cultist Fanatic is killed, the leash will float into Rupert’s hand. Gregory will monotonously pronounce Rupert to be his new master. Rupert wants none of that and immediately demands that Gregory be freed and turned back to normal. The collar and leash vanish! But the spider body remains.
+
At first, Gregory freaks out! He’s very upset about being kidnapped, tortured, turned into a monstrosity, and forced to fight! But he suddenly realizes his new body is biologically male (which is very gender affirming) and calms down. Rupert assures that he’s welcome in his home regardless of his form.
+
If Gregory died during the fight, Rupert takes a moment to mourn, and swears to avenge him.
+
Sebastian’s Lair
+
The ritual chamber has two doors. An unlocked door leads further downward. The other is locked, hiding an elaborate blood bathhouse. A lone Cultist bathes in a bathtub of blood, looking quite relaxed.
+
Downward further is a large gothic throne room. Four cultists are standing near the throne. Some sort of horrible ritual has been setup in the middle of the room, and Sebastian is impatiently pacing around it. He needs a bound monstrosity (amongst other gathered things) for his ritual of ascension, and is waiting for the cultist upstairs to bring Gregory. This is the closest he’s ever gotten to the power he craves. If he succeeds, unfathomable amounts of destruction and suffering would be inflicted. But unbeknownst to him, Gregory is now unbound (or dead) so the ritual cannot be completed.
+

Roleplaying Sebastian Hill
+
Sebastian is an absurdly evil power hungry maniac. He doesn’t really care how he gets his power, wether it’s demonic, necromancy, abyssal, whatever! No principles, he simply wants to subjugate the world! Most of his cultists share the same ideology, but are more reserved.
+
Rupert has made Sebastian paranoid and frantic. How does this man keep besting him?
+

Confronting Sebastian
+
Once in sight, Rupert will confront Sebastian! Once Sebastian realizes that this scarecrow is Rupert, he freaks out! Rupert yet again foiled his plans! How does Rupert keep doing this again and again? Even after Sebastian killed him! How!? Rupert has no idea what he’s talking about, and Sebastian elaborates.
+
+
Rupert trampled difficult to cultivate flowers needed for a potion to become a Lich. (Rupert thought they were just petunias?)
+
Rupert stole demonic salts found only in the hells. (Rupert thought it was just salt, his maids used it all up for cooking. Had a bite to it!)
+
Rupert beat Sebastian to a powerful necromancers tomb and stole a jewel which could make someone into an undead overlord. (Rupert thought it was pretty and gave it to Maggie as a gift.)
+
Gregory was originally hired by Sebastian, then poached by Rupert while he was traveling to Sebastian’s mansion. Sebastian had intended to use him as a sacrifice. (Sebastian offered slave wages! A hardworking man like Gregory deserved better!)
+
Rupert convinced multiple cultists to turn a new leaf. (Rupert had simply invited a group of struggling young men he met nearby over for tea, giving them some kind words and money.)
+
Much more! Always with a smile too, taunting him!
+
+
Sebastian had developed this mythical image of Rupert as a machiavellian mastermind, but now realizes that he’s just an idiot.
+
Rupert is rather upset about being killed, and declares that Sebastian will now pay for what he’s done! He then unleashes a cacophony of the foulest curse words possible, spending an entire minute cussing Sebastian out. Once finished, he feels much better. Surely Sebastian will think twice about being evil after bearing witness to those harsh words. But of course, Sebastian would never let the party leave alive. Fight! Sebastian is a Mage Apprentice, and four Cultists are behind him.
+
House of Horrors
+
With Sebastian and his cult stopped, the country has been inadvertently saved! Rupert and the party will head back to his mansion, which is now the home of a Scarecrow, an Undead, a Spider Person, and what appears to be a Skeleton. Everyone will profusely thank the group, and Rupert will offer the group some gold and treasures from his collection. The party is welcome back whenever they need a place to stay!
